This Geography Classified Nomenclature module deals with the general concepts of Parts and Types of Rivers.

The module includes:

  • Stream: Understand currents of water formed by precipitation and influenced by gravity.
  • Torrent: Learn about violent, rapid streams with increased velocity or roughness.
  • River: Study large streams of fresh water flowing into seas, lakes, or other rivers.
  • Channel: Discover deep, navigable parts of rivers, bays, or harbors.
  • Source: Explore the origins of rivers from springs, lakes, rainfall, snowfall, or glacial melting.
  • Course: Learn about the path a river follows, including upper, middle, and lower parts.
  • Bed: Understand the natural channel carved by a river.
  • Bank: Study the sloping ground along the edge of a river.
  • Mouth: Discover where rivers enter seas, lakes, or larger rivers.
  • Upper Part: Learn about the rapid-flowing part of a river near its source.
  • Lower Part: Explore the gently flowing part of a river building up its bed.
  • Rapids: Study parts of a river with swifter currents.
  • Cascade: Discover small waterfalls or collections of waterfalls.
  • Cataract: Learn about large waterfalls over precipices.
  • Meander: Understand curves in the course of a river swinging side to side across flat land.


Booklets and wall charts are not included in the homeschool version. The three-part card format includes control cards, which children can use to match labels and pictures. If desired, these control cards can be bound and used as booklets. We have opted to exclude booklets and wall charts to make the homeschool edition more cost-effective.
