Part of the Ecology Level 6-9 Curriculum.
Process of Decomposition: Chain of Detritivores is a digital printable Montessori ecology material created for lower elementary students ages 6–9. This hands-on science set helps children understand what happens after a tree falls in the forest and how insects, fungi, and other decomposers take part in recycling organic matter. Students work with illustrated cards and informational text to explore detritivores, bark beetles, carpenter ants, termites, long-horned beetles, and dry rot fungi as they follow the transformation of dead wood into smaller material and, eventually, nutrients returned to the soil. The material supports lessons on decomposition, nutrient cycling, forest ecology, soil health, food webs, interdependence, and the essential role of decomposers in maintaining healthy ecosystems. It may be used for Montessori nomenclature work, small-group presentations, science centers, ecology follow-up, homeschool lessons, and student research.
