Part of the Ecology Level 6-9 Curriculum.

Layers and Composition of Soil is a digital printable Montessori science material created for lower elementary students ages 6–9. This resource helps children understand that soil is more than “dirt”; it is a layered Earth material formed through weathering, erosion, decomposition, geological processes, and the interaction of living and nonliving matter. Students explore soil horizons from the ground level down to bedrock while also studying the different particles and materials that make up soil, including sand, silt, clay, gravel, pebbles, and boulders. The material supports Earth science, ecology, environmental science, classification, vocabulary development, observation skills, and hands-on investigation of soil as part of the larger rock cycle and ecosystem.

What Is Included

This printable set includes a full-color Soil Horizons control chart, nomenclature-style cards for soil horizons, ground level, topsoil, subsoil, weathered parent material, and bedrock, as well as soil composition cards for boulders, pebbles, gravel, sand, silt, and clay. Each concept includes matching picture cards, descriptive text cards, and fill-in-the-blank student cards for review or independent follow-up. The set also includes teacher lesson notes for presenting soil composition and soil horizons, with suggested materials such as soil samples, paper plates, and magnifying glasses so children can observe, sort, compare, and classify real soil components
