Part of the Ecology Level 6-9 Curriculum.

Layers of a Temperate Forest is a digital printable Montessori ecology material designed for lower elementary students ages 6–9. This resource helps children examine the structure of a temperate forest by looking closely at the different levels where plants, animals, fungi, insects, mosses, and decomposing matter live and interact. Students are introduced to the canopy layer, sapling layer, shrub layer, herbaceous layer, floor layer, and tree litter as they begin to see that a forest is not one single space, but a living system made of connected habitats. The material supports biome study, forest ecology, vocabulary development, classification work, environmental science lessons, and follow-up research on plant growth, sunlight, decomposition, soil nutrients, and ecosystem relationships.

What Is Included

This printable set includes a full-color Layers of the Forest control chart, nomenclature-style cards for the canopy layer, sapling layer, shrub layer, herbaceous layer, floor layer, and tree litter, matching picture cards, description cards, fill-in-the-blank student cards for review and assessment, and teacher lesson notes with aims, presentation steps, and follow-up suggestions. The teacher notes guide the adult in presenting the forest layers, focusing on plant and animal life within each level, and extending the work through drawing, research, task cards, or additional biome studies
