Part of the Ecology Level 6-9 Curriculum.
Layers of the Ocean is a digital printable Montessori ecology material designed for lower elementary students ages 6–9. This resource introduces children to the major ocean zones and helps them understand that the ocean is not one uniform environment, but a series of layered ecosystems shaped by depth, sunlight, pressure, food availability, and adaptation. Students explore the littoral zone, neritic zone, pelagic zone, epipelagic zone, mesopelagic zone, bathypelagic zone, abyssopelagic zone, and hadopelagic zone while learning how marine life changes from the shore to the deepest ocean trenches. The material supports oceanography, marine biology, environmental science, biome study, vocabulary development, classification, food chain work, and independent research.
What Is Included
This printable set includes a full-color Layers of the Ocean chart, an additional visual chart for observation and discussion, Ocean Layers task cards, nomenclature cards for each ocean zone, matching picture cards, definition cards, fill-in-the-blank student cards, and teacher lesson notes with aims, presentation steps, and follow-up suggestions. The task cards invite students to observe how organisms change as the ocean deepens, define key marine ecology terms such as plankton, phytoplankton, zooplankton, nekton, and benthos, create marine food chains, and research cyanobacteria and alternative sources of energy in ocean ecosystem
