This Geography Classified Nomenclature module deals with the general concepts of Island Formations.

The module includes:

  • Island: Understand the basic concept of an island, smaller than a continent and surrounded by water.
  • Continental Island: Learn about parts of the continental shelf surrounded by water.
  • Oceanic Island: Discover volcanic islands that rise from the ocean floor.
  • Reef: Study limestone formations created by marine animals, including fringing reefs, barrier reefs, and atolls.
  • Fringing Reef: Explore reefs built along coastlines with shallow water channels.
  • Barrier Reef: Investigate larger reefs further from land with deep water on both sides.
  • Atoll: Understand circular or crescent-shaped reefs enclosing lagoons, sometimes forming habitable islands.
  • Emerging Bank: Learn about sea floor portions raised enough for navigation.
  • Group of Islands: Study formations of multiple islands, either as chains or archipelagos.
  • Island Chain: Discover extended lines of islands.
  • Archipelago: Examine groups of islands in large water bodies, often in volcanic and earthquake-prone areas.

Booklets and wall charts are not included in the homeschool version. The three-part card format includes control cards, which children can use to match labels and pictures. If desired, these control cards can be bound and used as booklets. We have opted to exclude booklets and wall charts to make the homeschool edition more cost-effective.
