Designed to complement the study of the kingdoms, this tree of life is based on the cladistical taxonomic system, and it categorizes organisms into groups based on their evolutionary relationships. It is based on the principle of parsimony, which states that the most likely explanation for the similarities and differences among organisms is that they are inherited from a common ancestor beginning by showing the progression of life from amino acids through the development of the various kingdoms.
Although the idea of a tree of life was originally described by Charles Darwin, it was not readily accepted until Carl Woese offered to refine the idea using genetic data to show that all organisms share common genetic patterns that can ultimately be traced back to a common origin.
